Mongolians used a variety of weapons ,but they specialized in archery and combat on horse back. They used a special compact re-curve bow that was used on horse back. The bow came with all different type of arrows including flaming arrows, armor piercing arrows, and whistling arrows. Every mongol soldier was proficient with a bow on both the ground and horse back. They could hang from the edge of the saddle and still be able to shoot accurately. The Mongolians relied heavily on their cavalry. Since the beginning of the empire Mongolians have always favored fighting on horse back and their weapons mirror that. The tuko mongol saber was the favored weapon of the army. It was efficient on horse back and off. The turko mongol saber (shown above) was one sided blade made for slicing people while on horse back. The mongols also had hooked lances used for pulling their enemies off their horse. The mongols each carried a dagger for close range combat just in case they found themselves in that situation. The Mongolians favored weapons that they could use effectively on horse back.
The early mongols had a very crude technique on making armor. They would of course make the armor out of leather because most didn't have the materials or experience to craft it from steel. These leather plates were rather weak or not made very well. They would then strengthen the armor by putting a layer of silk under the leather then covering the leather in lacquer . After the early Mongolian Empire the mongols adapted a laminar steel plate with a half inch of leather underneath.
The mongols didn't just have weapons for the individual soldier ,but they also had a arsenal of siege weapons. They procured the art of siege from the people they conquered including the people of China and eastern Europe. These weapons and tactics were manned by people they captured from China. They used weapons like the triple bow siege crossbow that they adapted from the Chinese siege crossbow. These weapons were used to fire incendiary arrows hundreds of yards from the launch point. They also used catapults that fired a variety of artillery. For example they could launch things like human corpses, naphtha bombs, and 100-pound rocks.
